After disscussing the different bible versions to consider, let’s look at a few key features that each bible may offer to help you better navigate your study time.

Print & Font

First let’s consider your comfort in your eye sight! Let’s face it, some of us are againing and our eyesight gives us away. I’ve recently had to get readers just so I can see my computer screen without getting a grueling headache by the end of the day.

Bibles come in all sorts of prints now, some are small and compact where others offer a more friendly version that is large print, be warned, there’s more pages with these to compensate for the larger print and they are a bit bigger bibles all together.

Reference Bibles

These bibles have a reference section on each page that contains other verses that are relevant to a verse, when you begin following those verses, you can gather a deeper understanding of that passage. Sometimes you will have several page makers sticking out of your bible when this occurs. The bible is connected and if you follow enough references you will find yourself reading the entire contents of the bible, not that this is a bad thing, but when you begin the discovery trail, be sure you have plenty of page markers!

Thumb Index

This can come in handy if you are not familiar with the order of where the book in the bible can be located. If you have ever been to a vacation bible school, you may be familiar with bible drills. This is a fun game that would challenge kids/teens to search for a certain verse in the bible and read it allowed once they find it. This game helps with being more familiar with the bible and to locate verses with ease. If you are not as familiar with the bible, you will begin to see the more you open to study, the more familiar you will become. Everything takes time, one is never too old to be familiar with the bible, we are all learning new things!

The thumb index are those grooves knotched out of the pages that show the bible chapters, this can help save time when using during bible study or following alowing with a sermon. It’s important to read and find these passages yourself, even though you do not require to have a bible while following along on the bible devotionals here at Creative Journey, I strongly encourage you to have one.

Red Letter

The red lettering is what we see when Jesus speaks in the bible. Years ago when I was beginning my journey as a Newborn Christian, a woman told me that it’s good to have the red lettering in the bible, it’s a way it makes His voice stand out amongst everything else, and it also reminds us of His sacrafice, He is the Living Word.

Study Bibles

These are some amazing bibles! There are so many now that you can choose from, I almost want to buy all that I can get my hands on, but I can only study out of so many at once. I have had times when doing a bible study, that I would have several bibles open at different chapters, this helps when doing some refrence searching! Bible studies have come a long way over the years, they now have some that have areas you can write small notes off to the side or at the bottom. This is your bible, it’s your personal letter from God, if you feel a verse pops out and gets your attention, then underline or highlight it so you can find it again! Each verse speaks to individuals in unique ways, be sure to keep those verese that mean sometning to you where you can locate them again!

Some bible studies have small bits of information that can help you better understand the events or even the historical details that we would otherwise read over and not notice.

Take your time in choosing your study bible, if you can’t choose one, it’s okay to have several, just be sure it’s one that you can easily use so when you do open and begin studying, you aren’t discouraged on the functionality of it.

Highlighters and Pens

I have used a basic office highlighter to use in my bible, but as you may well know by now, those pages are very thin in most cases and the highlighter or ink you use can bleed through to the net page or even smear. The now have special highlighters and pens you can get that will eliminate smearing or bleeding, this would be a good investment!

Place Holders

Be sure you have plenty of place holders that you can use when reading your bible. If you are reading through the bible, you’ll want to find your place where you left off. You also want additional page markers while doing bible studies or when listening to sermons. You can get creative with these! They have some that are magnetic, string/tassels, sticky note tabs, or the old fashion book mark. I have used flowers, candy wrappers and old magazines ripped into small pieces to save my place in the bible. Get creative, make it unique to you!

Bible Covers

Bible covers are great, they keep your bible protected espeically on the go, these come in a complete zipped up type all the way to book sleeves. Find what works best for you!

Notebook or Journal

If you are a note taker, be sure to have a small notebook or journal that you can keep along with your bible. This will be for your personal notes, nothing fancy neeeded, it can even be something to use when you want to further explore a though or find out about the historical significance of something you discovered in the bible. Remember that even the smallest of events can have a biggere significance to it if we pay attention and ask, “why would God make sure this was mentioned?”

Voice Recorder

If writing isn’t your thing, maybe having a voice recorder to speak your thoughts with will work for you.

Last Thoughts….

There is no right or wrong way to studying your bible! God will lead the way! You know what will work for you best to remember things that God teaches you, so do what is familiar to you!

A few tips that may help before you begin studying…

Be sure to make time to study and take time for God’s Word, even 15 minutes will give you a good start of your day. Before you read, talk to God, ask for His understanding and to give you a verse that He knows you are in need of. Understanding God’s Word will come as you become more familiar with reading the bible and God. A closer relationship with God will help you along your journey!

If you have a busy schedule, try to at least purpose some time in the beginning of your day and at the end of each day to read just a small portion. Get your encouragement, hope, love, joy and build your faith slowly and consistently.
