The Beatitude Series Part 6:
Jesus Teaches Us How To Pray
Key Verses of Discussion
Matthew 6:9-13
What is it like to speak to the One who Created you? Have you ever been nervous when you get ready to pray? Maybe you’re unsure of how to approach God, or is it just the pure intimidation that He is the Almighty God and we are but just a small individual amongst several others?
Jesus gives an example of how to pray to God; this is a blueprint example in showing us that we matter to God, and even the smallest of topics, He still wants to hear from us. When Jesus became the sacrificial Lamb that took away our sins, He changed how we communicate with God. He removed the Law. God knew what was to come in our world. He made an easier way for anyone to reach out to God through prayer, and it’s all due to Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins. This allows us to have direct communication and our fellowship restored with our Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ.
Let’s break down the blueprint of how Jesus teaches us to pray.
Jesus Teaches Us How To Pray
Matthew 6: 9-13
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thing is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
Jesus Teaches Us How To Pray
We discussed in Part 5 about the hypocrisy of how many would pray in the corners of the streets so that they may be seen of men. This is not how God wants us to pray, although it is great to pray in groups; God desires an intimate relationship with us, where we can truly pour out our hearts to Him without being concerned about others being judged by us or as a performance. God wants us- our raw humility, not a fake performance of going through the empty motions.
After This Manner Therefore Pray
When learning to pray, Jesus teaches us that we are to first acknowledge our Heavenly Father, and we are approaching the throne of God in Heaven. “Hallowed be thy name,” reverences God for His great Holiness. This teaches us to praise, honor, and acknowledge God’s greatness when we approach Him in prayer. To be thankful for all He does for us, and for what He means to us.
Thy Kingdom Come
This portion reminds us of who is in control, no matter the circumstances we may face, to be reminded that we are to live the best to our ability to live a godly life, even here on earth. “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” The things of our world are not as they are in heaven, God’s understandings are not ours, His ways are Holy, our motives sometimes come with attachments of our selfish desires.
When we pray, “Thy will be done,” it’s surrendering the will of our desires over to God, and that God may have His will in our lives. We may not like the results, but God has a plan that is greater than our own. This world is not our home; we are just passing through. For a born-again Christian believer, this makes sense, but the worldly view doesn’t. We are to set our hearts, minds, and our “treasures” in heaven, so we are to walk daily in the will of God, what He would have us to do to further the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 6:19 “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:”
“Give us this day, our daily bread.”
Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread
Matthew 6: 11-13
“Give us this day our daily bread.”
Daily Bread
By asking God in prayer for His will be done and give us our daily bread, we are acknowledging that He is the provider of our provisions, He supplies our every need, spiritually and physically. This is a reference to when God delivered the Israelites from bondage in Egypt, and God supplied their every need. He gave them daily portions of manna that rained down from heaven. They were instructed to only consume what they would in a day; any that remained would be eaten by worms.
We are to live in the present day that we are in, allow the past to be lessons learned, the future is not promised, so we are to be concerned with the things of this day, pray for the things we may be concerned about in the future, but to put our complete trust in God to care for our every need.
Praying for Forgiveness & Over Temptations
Matthew 6: 11-13
“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
Forgive Us Our Debts
Jesus continues to teach us to forgive our debts. What exactly does He mean by our debts? What debt do we owe? We owe the debt of sin, and Jesus is instructing us to ask forgiveness for our sins. If we are not aware of any, since we aren’t always honest with ourselves, we can ask God to reveal any sin that may be in our lives that we are unaware of.
Forgive Others
We are to ask foregiveness of our transgressions, and we are to forgive others who may have transgressed against us. Forgiveness is very powerful. When we allow God to work in our lives and in others, we can be a witness to His grace. Forgiving others allows us be the light and show an example of how God’s grace and forgiveness apply to us.
Lead Us Not Into Temptation
Asking God in prayer to keep us on the straight and narrow path so that we may not allow temptations into our lives. Delivering us from evil and the plans satan would have to destroy us, we are tempted daily.
Continuing To Praising God
“For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, for ever, Amen.” Matthew 6:13
The kingdom of Heaven belongs to God, all power and glory, praising God in the beginning and the end of each prayer that is spoken. To acknowledge His grace, mercy, forgiveness, and his almighty power.
Final Thoughts
Acknowledge God’s greatness by praising His goodness, power, and who He is.
Be specific in thanksgiving to all the great blessings God has given.
Be mindful of the things for the day, that we rely on His provisions for our spiritual and physical needs.
Asking forgiveness for our sins, be specific and name each one, and be sure to forgive those who may have sinned against you, release their transgressions from your heart.
Guidance to avoid temptations, asking God to guide us on the right path so that we may be delivered from evil.
When we don’t have the words to speak, giving praise and naming your blessings in prayer to God is a way to open your heart and spirit to God, even when words cannot form. God knows the intent of our hearts. He desires a relationship with us that’s unique. He doesn’t hold perfect expectations for us when we communicate with Him through prayer; He just wants our presence.
Prayer Journaling Prompts
Let us do something a little differently today and try a prayer journal. Here are some things that you can add to it to help you get started:
Start with praise, and describe how great God is to you
Listing blessings, what has God done for you today?
Provisions, what has God supplied to you, what may you have need of right now?
Transgressions, name the sins and ask God to help you do better, name individuals who have done wrong towards you, and ask God to help you forgive them.
Temptations, name those out as well. What is a temptation that you feel is a transgression against God? Be honest with God, He will help you.
Praise and worship, when we don’t have the words to speak, God knows our hearts. Going to God in prayer to lay all your burdens at His feet, He will comfort us, God wants our presence, not perfection.
Before you leave, will you join me in prayer?
Father, we thank You for Your precious Word. In this passage of Scripture You are teaching us how we can communicate directly with you. May our prayer life be more abundant, frequest and help us to speak freely to You so that we may be honest when we pray. Guide us today, we are surrounded by so much evil, we ask that You protect each of us joined in prayer and our families. Guide us, that we may continue to grow towards You each day so that we may carry the light that shines within us to others. Many are lost and don’t know You, Father. I pray that we may be living testimonies of Your forgiveness and grace so that others may be drawn to You, Heavenly Father.
May You get all the honor and glory, through Jesus Christ, Amen.

Quick Note:
Some Bible studies may take longer than others, as I am often led to explain certain verses in greater detail. I want you to know that these blog posts are written straight from my heart - they are not created by AI, so if you pay close attention, you may find my little nuggets of imperfections! What you read here are my own thoughts and reflections, guided by where God leads me.
I am not a professional; I’m simply a southern wife and mother of five with a deep desire to share the truth of our loving Heavenly Father. He loves you, and He longs to have a relationship with you. We are not called to be perfect, but we are called to be led by Him.
God has placed so much on my heart to share, and my prayer is that these words bless and encourage you. I’m not here for recognition or fame - only to spread the message of God’s love to you, my new friend, and to many others.
