We are now continuing with Matthew 6:19-23, where Jesus talks about where we should keep our focus, not of things on earth, but on treasures in heaven.

The Beatitude Series Part 9:

Treasures In Heaven

Key Verses of Discussion

Matthew 6:19-23

In the last devotion, we discussed Fasting and the amazing benefits it has on our spiritual, mental, and physical being. As I researched a bit more about fasting, I came across several health benefits that can help contribute to our physical well-being alongside our spiritual renewal. If you missed it, I encourage you to check it out: Beatitudes Series Part 8.

While we continue to study the Beatitudes, there’s so much to slow down and unpack as we read along, so this may seem like just a few short verses we are studying at a time, but there’s so much to discover, and studying God’s Word is a journey, not a race.

Grab a fresh, hot cup of tea or coffee, grab your Bible and even a notebook, and let’s continue learning what Jesus teaches us about Heavenly Treasures!

Treasures In Heaven

Matthew 6: 19-23

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

Treasures Upon Earth

This world is full of distractions, some worse than others, and when we place anything to be more valuable than God, we are creating idols. Idols are not always things, it could be what we spend our time doing, or placing anything above God. It’s nice to get new things for the home, a new outfit, or plan a family vacation, but if these take time away from the fellowship of God, we are placing our treasures (desires) upon this earth and not in heaven.

We are all guilty of this, me included! It’s so easy to get swept away in our minds, dreams, and ambistions we rush so far ahead when we stop to see where God is; we are the ones who left Him behind.

Things and Objects

As I get older and my children are now all adults, I often find myself with thoughts of the clutter that surrounds me in my home. Some items are keepsakes attached to memories of vacations, passed down heirlooms, seasonal decorations, and the occasional stack of papers I promised I would go through “ONE DAY” that never seems to be on my calendar.

Time flies when you’re busy raising a family and being the keeper of the home, and when I’m surrounded by so much STUFF, does it really contribute to my family or my well-being? It’s more stuff to dust, clean, repair, or make decisions as to whether it’s valuable enough to hang on to.

What’s sad is it’s about to be March, and I still have all my Christmas decorations piled up in my kitchen waiting for some time I can find in my weekend to put them all away, perhaps an Easter tree? Hahaha

When the time comes when the Lord calls me home, or sounds that trumpet, will all those THINGS be important? I came here without anything, and I will leave without those things I have accumulated over the years, but one thing I can take with me is the ones that have put their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior; that is the true treasure!

“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal…” Matthew 6:20

Treasures In Heaven

Treasures in heaven, what a beautiful thought! Jesus wants us to lay our treasures in heaven, so what are these treasures and how can we “send” them to heaven?

Treasures are the times we spend with God, prayer, studying His Word and whatever may help with the adding to the heaven population, by witnessing to others about the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Gems In The Bible

Time spent in the Bible; when we read, it’s not just a regular book, it’s the Living Word of God. The Bible is so amazing and miraculous, it’s always giving us more information each time we read it, even if it’s a passage that you have read ten times. You’re spiritual maturity is not the same, it grows and the depth of understanding that God reveals to you each time you read it matures as well. There’s times God may not show you certain things, but when we read that same passage late, it knocks us down as if we hit a brick wall! Those are the treasures, or I like to refer to them as golden gems! The feeling you get when that realization happens, something that God knows you needed at that exact time, is one amazing experience! Reading the Bible is important, the more we read it, the more treasures God reveals to us.

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:21

Heart Of Treasure

Where we set our mind, thoughts, dreams and goals is where we have our treasure. When you make a life decision, what you spend your time doing, how you live your daily life; they all amount to treasures. You decide if those are treasures fit enough for the kingdom of heaven. What you spend your effort and time on, is what is important.

Daily tasks can still lead to treasures laid up in heaven, when you repent to realign your life with God’s will, the daily tasks and chores you are expected to do will begin to feel less of a burden. When you walk with God in every aspect of your life, traveling to work, grocery shopping, house chores etc. all these things can be done with honoring God.

“The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!” Matthew 6:22-23

Light Of The Eye

The light of the body is the eye; the eye is the window of one’s soul. There is something about an individual that can be seen not by what they say or do, but in their eyes. The eyes reveal much about an individual; you can see joy or sadness, light composure or heavy burdens. The eyes can truly tell what state an individual may be in.

When you spend time to grow closer to God and deepen your personal relationship with Him, the light that is of God will reflect within you. Light radiates in darkness when you witness to others who don’t know God; the light will be seen in you, and the desire to have such a light will be sought after for their own lives.

Before you leave, will you join me in prayer?

Father, we thank You for the gift of today, we are not promised tomorrow, but allow us to savour the presence of this day. Let us be aware where we set our attention and affections, that the focus of our attention may not be diverted away from You, and our treasures may be of the things that would further the Kingdom of Heaven. Help us to continue to have affections for Heaven, and to have a burden to share the gospel of truth, forgiveness, hope, healing, grace, and the promise of everlasting life with others. This world is not our home; we are just passing through. May we remember that the things of this world are not eternal, but the Gift of God through Salvation is. I pray that those who may be studying and praying along with our community would know for certain that they are covered in grace through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. God be with those who need Your comfort, healing, and guidance. We ask this in Your precious Holy Name, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Quick Note:

Some Bible studies may take longer than others, as I am often led to explain certain verses in greater detail. I want you to know that these blog posts are written straight from my heart - they are not created by AI, so if you pay close attention, you may find my little nuggets of imperfections! What you read here are my own thoughts and reflections, guided by where God leads me.

I am not a professional; I’m simply a southern wife and mother of five with a deep desire to share the truth of our loving Heavenly Father. He loves you, and He longs to have a relationship with you. We are not called to be perfect, but we are called to be led by Him.

God has placed so much on my heart to share, and my prayer is that these words bless and encourage you. I’m not here for recognition or fame - only to spread the message of God’s love to you, my new friend, and to many others.

God be with you!
