Proverbs 30:8-9
“Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.”
Remove Vanity and Lies
The author is asking God to remove vanity and lies from his life. Vanity is the beginning of a prideful heart, one that leads to the lie that everything is possible through one’s own knowledge and power.
Asking God to remove vanity gives us a humbling heart that recognizes we can do nothing without the power of God.
John 15:5 “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”
Poverty nor Riches
“Feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord?” The author brings out the character of having a humble and grateful heart-to be satisfied with what he has been given. Otherwise, he might forget who provided those things for him.
Let us be grateful for the things we have. When we have a grateful heart, we can concentrate on the things that God provides for us. In this world, there will always be that next new shiny object. If we aren’t grateful for what we have, we will never feel satisfaction. There will always be an urge to want more, which leads to greed.
Let us be grateful for what the Lord has provided, and not fret over unanswered prayers. God knows the things we are in need of before we know the need. Trust in God’s timing for all things, and rely on Him for the perfect provisions in our lives.
This week’s challenge:
Journaling questions:
What are the things I can be grateful for that God has provided?
What prayer have I asked of God that I’m still waiting on?
What can I be grateful for while I wait on God’s answer?
Is there vanity in my life? If there is, how can I turn this around to give God the glory?
Do I give God the honor and glory where He provides?
Name 10 things that God has provided for.
Each day this week, make it a habit to proclaim at least one new thing to be grateful for that God has provided.
Let us come together for a quick blessing for this week:
Heavenly Father,
Heavenly Father, thank you for being our Heavenly Father, our Great Provider. We do not need spoil, You know the exact amount that we need to sustain us. May You help guide us this week to be more observant of the blessings You have provided in our lives, may we be grateful for the prayers answered, and even the unanswered prayers. You know what is best for us, and You are aware of the things we are in need of before we ask You. Help us to be more grateful each day, and to share Your love and honor with others, reflecting the love You have for sons and daughters through Jesus Christ our Savior. We ask this in Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
May God be with you, my friend in Christ!
