Psalm 108:1-6
“O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early. I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations. For thy mercy is great above the heavens; and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth; That thy beloved may be delivered: save with thy right hand, and answer me.”
Waking with a heart fixed on God can change the entire course of our day. From the moment we rise, we have the opportunity to give Him honor and glory for the precious gift of a new day.
The psalmist speaks of waking with the psaltery and harp — rising with a song of praise in his heart. This joy and rejoicing is not just for what God does, but simply for who He is: our great and merciful Heavenly Father, who watches over us even while we sleep. His mercy stretches beyond the heavens; His truth reaches to the clouds. It’s something worth proclaiming to the nations.
Starting our day with worship — whether in song, prayer, or simply acknowledging God — sets the tone for the coming day. A joyful heart and a spirit of praise can shift our perspective and bring peace into our routine. When we give the first part of our day to the Lord, He helps to direct our path.
I’ve noticed that when I feel overwhelmed by the busyness of life, taking time to slow down before diving into the day makes all the difference. Spending even a few quiet moments in prayer and worship calms my heart and mind. Somehow, the day seems longer — not in a dragging or exhausting way, but with more focus, clarity, and grace to complete what’s in front of me.
This week’s challenge:
Set aside time to wake up early and be still before God. Give Him your anxieties, your burdens, and your concerns. Ask for His guidance in your challenges. If there’s someone in your life who doesn’t know the Lord, lift them up in prayer. And if you’re in a season of peace, thank Him — count your blessings one by one.
We are called to praise God in both the storm and the celebration.
At the end of the week, evaluate what’s changed. Has your mindset shifted? Did your day feel more centered, more peaceful, or more productive?
And remember: any time we begin shifting our lives to put God first, the enemy will try to discourage or distract us. Stay the course. Be vigilant. Live with purpose. When you put God first, He will lead you through.
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for this passage, to remind us to wake early and dedicate our newly given day to You. Help each one of us put You first each day this week. May our minds have peace, clarity, and reassurance no matter what the day may bring. You are at our side to help us through. Thank You for the precious Bible, where we find praise and comfort. Thank You for this day and every day to follow; may each day be renewed with a fresh outlook of praise and worship. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
