In memory of Charlie Kirk, a pioneer of our time to a voice in the wilderness, the one who battled Goliaths daily and boldly walked into the lion’s dens. If you feel led to support his family, you can find the website here: Turning Point USA. (I have no affiliation with this organization; this is just a heartfelt way to help spread love and support towards their family.)
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
We recently discussed the celebration of Halloween and the origins from which it derived. If you missed that post, I encourage you to read it so you are informed about the celebrations we should and should not take part in. You can find that here.
The Fear of The Lord
The fear of the Lord is not the same kind of fear we have in the world. This fear is a deep reverence and respect for God - recognizing His holiness and authority. To fear God means to honor His Word and to live with awareness that He will one day judge our actions. It is the beginning of obedience, humility, and wisdom.
Beginning of Knowledge
Having fear of the Lord marks the beginning of true knowledge. We must be careful to discern the wisdom of man and the wisdom of God. Many philosophies and ideologies of this world appear intelligent but often lead us away from God’s truth.
Let us be cautious about where our wisdom comes from. If the knowledge being taught does not align with the Scripture, it is not from God. Remember who the author of confusion is - satan.
Fools Despise Wisdom and Instruction
Those who rely on their own understanding or pridefully reject correction turn away from wisdom and instruction. It’s hard not to think of the growing pride within our society today - sadly, many have no desire to know God, His Word, or His wisdom.
They put their faith in human systems, governments, or other people instead of God. This is a dangerous path, for all these things are temporary. God is the Creator of all, and He alone is the true source of knowledge and instruction.
Final Thoughts
When we set out to learn something new, it’s wise to be cautious. If something doesn’t sit right in your spirit, pause and pray about it - seek God’s direction in the matter. God may be warning you to seek His truth instead.
A wise man or woman seeks righteous wisdom from those who walk with God. Even then, we must discern whether what is being taught aligns with Scripture. Everyone - no matter how respected - can make mistakes, but God never does.
Sometimes, beliefs are passed down through generations without question. Out of love and respect, we should seek the truth for ourselves and test every teaching against God’s Word. In doing so, we ensure that the wisdom we pass on to future generations is grounded in righteousness and truth.
Reflection & Journal Prompts
What does “The Fear of the Lord” mean to you?
Was there a time you followed worldly wisdom instead of godly wisdom? What was the result of that?
Write a prayer asking God to give you a heart that seeks His wisdom.
Weekly Challange
This week, take time to reflect before making decisions - big or small. Before seeking advice from others, pause and pray for God’s guidance.
As you go through the week, write down moments when you sense God’s wisdom guiding your thoughts or actions. You may be surprised how often He speaks when we take time to be still and listen.
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the wisdom You have provided us in Your Word. We ask that we be sensitive in our hearts and minds to listen to Your calm voice. Give us a heart that is sensitive to Your voice, help us to keep Your Word hidden in our hearts so we may easily discern worldly or godly wisdom. May You continually add to our wisdom and knowledge daily. Forgive us of our sins, help us where we have failed You.
We ask this in Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
May God be with you, my friend in Christ!
