Proverbs 23:9

In memory of Charlie Kirk, a pioneer of our time to a voice in the wilderness, the one who battled Goliaths daily and boldly walked into the lion’s dens. If you feel led to support his family, you can find Turning Point USA's website here. (I have no affiliation with this organization; this is just a heartfelt way to help spread love and support towards their family.)

“Speak not in the ears of a fool: For he will despise the wisdom of thy words.”

Defining A Fool

Who would be considered to be a fool?

The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. Psalms 14:1.

In Scripture, a fool often represents a wicked individual, someone who acts contrary to sound moral wisdom. Those who are more concerned with the temporal present way of life rather than service to God, which provides lasting, eternal life and happiness.

Have you ever met such an individual? When one thinks of a fool, they may imagine a court jester who is clumsy and everywhere. But fools can be educated as well.

When one doesn’t know God, they don’t have true sound wisdom that comes from Him. In fact, because they have so much worldly wisdom, they don’t know God. The wisdom of the world can cloud one’s judgment and lead one to become blind to God’s wisdom by keeping the mind distracted or occupied with temporal things.

In 1 Corinthians 1:21, the wisdom of this world does not bring us closer to God, but through the foolishness of preaching.

“…man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceedeth by the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4

The wisdom of God and the wisdom of man are not the same. One can get a higher education, but if they don’t know God, they rob themselves of true wisdom that lasts for eternity.

Now that we have determined the type of individual the Bible is referring to, we see that we are not to engage in conversation with them. The Scripture warns us NOT to speak to those with ears of a fool, and the next portion tells us why.

He Will Despise Wisdom

Those who are not ready to hear God’s wisdom have closed their heart to understand it. This includes the morals on which a Christian bases their moral beliefs.

God is omniscient- all-knowing. He created each person and the world in which we live - He knows us better than we know ourselves. God knows our experiences, strengths, and weaknesses. God will put people in your path to uplift or challenge you in your faith.

God communicates to us through the Holy Spirit. When a messenger preaches the Gospel of Jesus Christ, they should seek God first for guidance. A true man of God who preaches to a congregation in a church should empty themselves, repent of their own sins, and ask God for the wisdom He would have them to share with them. Those that don’t look to God first to get filled with the spiritual “bread” - Word of God and have a close fellowship with Him, speak empty messages that are not God inspired. Be careful of those on whom you rely for spiritual guidance.

The Holy Spirit guides those who would preach or share the gospel of Jesus Christ - The Word of God. When the Holy Spirit guides the message, God’s Word will not come back void. It’s not up to us to make someone understand; it’s our responsibility as Christians to share the gospel message of Jesus Christ. We often use the analogy of planting or watering seeds - by sharing the Word of God, we are to share the message and pray, step away, and allow God to do the rest.

When we step away, we are not giving up on that individual; we are stepping out of the spotlight to allow God to bring another messenger in to confirm with more “bread” in sharing the gospel and perhaps adding more information, building upon what the last messenger had shared.

There is a reason for this: God will continue to expose an individual to the gospel message through different people, individuals, or circumstances. When God does this, He is gradually calling those who do not know Him to Him. When we witness the same message from different sources, things are no longer coincidental - I like to call them God-incidences.

When we attempt to converse with a fool, we get frustrated and then impatient. This may get us in a state that would not be beneficial to us or to the other individual; it’s best to discern the situation, and if we begin to get frustrated, it may be time to walk away from the conversation, know our limits, and be sensitive to listen to the Holy Spirit.

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father,

We come together as a community that desires to share the gospel with others. We ask that You would be our guide to give us the words that we may speak, the humble heart to speak truth towards others. You tell us to ask anything in Your name, and You will give it to us. We ask for Biblical wisdom to continue to grow in our spiritual walk, to know and understand Your Word that we may hide it in our minds as we speak with others. May You help us to discern for the time to speak and a time to walk away. I pray a blessing upon those uniting in prayer, that they may know You and have everlasting life, believe in faith, through Jesus Christ.

We ask this in Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

May God be with you, my friend in Christ!
